What will I be doing?

This post is created to drive forward the Landscape Management Skills Scheme funded through the HPC s106/DCO. The scheme will provide training in practical landscape skills in the Quantock Hills National Landscape and surrounding areas. The focus of this training is to support unemployed individuals and young people with introductory training in practical landscape skills, providing a pathway for trainees to progress to further training, certification, volunteering, or employment in this sector.

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:

You will be required to organise and deliver a variety of appropriate practical training opportunities, including recruiting potential trainees to the scheme through social media, by collaborating with Somerset Council colleagues, as well as 3rd sector employment and skills organisations. Your key roles will be to:

  • Develop communications to promote the LMSS Project
  • Liaise with landowners or managers regarding potential sites for practical training activities.
  • Organise & deliver a range of practical countryside skills training
  • Provide practical activities and pastoral support to inspire and motivate people to progress in this field
  • Work closely with the Quantock Hills National Landscape Team to link opportunities with other streams of work such as volunteering, conservation work, wellness and other projects.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you:

  • Hold a full driving licence including D1 entitlement (minibus).
  • Excellent practical skills in habitat conservation, estate skills and use of a range of hand tools.
  • Excellent people skills that enable you to lead, inspire and support small groups of people from a range of ages, needs and backgrounds and in an outdoor environment.
  • Are physically able to work outdoors in a countryside environment; accessing remote sites that may only be accessible on foot, working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Have experience of working with unemployed or young people.
  • Experience with MS software including Excel and Word.
