Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, has a fantastic opportunity for a Communications and Engagement Apprentice to join our team in Exeter.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue is the largest non-metropolitan fire and rescue service in England. We provide prevention, protection, and response services across the counties of Devon and Somerset.
This opportunity is available on an 18-month fixed term contract working 37 hours a week (including release to attend Exeter College) and we are offering a competitive salary starting at £25992.00 (gross) per annum.
While undertaking this role the successful candidate will have completed a Multi-Channel Marketer Apprenticeship.

What will I be doing?
As our Communications and Engagement Assistant (Apprentice) you will work across the three areas covered by our Communications and Engagement team – communications, consultation and engagement, and digital content.
You will support the day-to-day activities of the team and be involved in planning, delivering, and evaluating campaigns. You will create content for a range of audiences and channels and support our engagement activities.
It’s a varied role with a lot of scope to make a difference and learn new things along the way.
Key responsibilities of our Communications and Engagement Assistant will include:
- Helping create engaging and transactional content for the Service’s digital channels.
- Assisting with writing, editing, and publishing content across our channels.
- Assisting the team with developing communication and digital marketing campaigns including planning, delivery, and evaluation.
- Supporting the Service by assisting with communications campaign activity.
- Supporting our consultation and engagement team with planning, carrying out and analysing consultation and engagement activities both internally and externally
- Supporting with event planning for events, such as our staff awards and the Blue Light Carol Service.
- Working with other members of the Communications and Engagement team to help us get the best out of all our activity.
- Assisting with writing, editing, and publishing press releases, and monitoring media.
- Assisting with campaign monitoring and creating campaign evaluation reports including our monthly KPI report.
- Maintaining the reputation of the Communications and Engagement team by displaying a high level of customer service and personability.
- Maintaining security and confidentiality of information, whether computer based or otherwise, in line with legislation.
- Attending local, regional, and national meetings or events as required.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
What we’re looking for in our Communications and Engagement Assistant:
- Level 3 qualification (A Levels, BTEC or equivalent), and grade C/5 or above in GCSE English and Maths.
- Knowledge of the communications discipline, including digital marketing and social media.
- Digital knowledge and skills to be able to use a variety of applications and tools.
- A keen eye for detail.
- Good customer and client relationship skills.
- Ability to pick up and learn new things quickly.
- Ability to travel to sites throughout Devon and Somerset and on occasions outside the two counties.
