Do you enjoy turning complex processes into simple, accessible digital experiences?
Are you curious about how good design and smart forms can make life easier for residents and colleagues alike?
Somerset Council is looking for an enthusiastic user-centred Digital Design & Development Assistant to join our Digital Transformation team, helping us improve accessibility and efficiency across content and forms.
This role sits at the heart of Somerset Council’s digital transformation – shaping how thousands of people experience our services every day. From applying for support to completing everyday tasks online, your work will help remove barriers, improve access and save time for both residents and teams.
No two days are the same – and that’s exactly how we like it. You’ll be encouraged to try ideas, learn from what works (and what doesn’t), and keep improving.
What will I be doing?
The Digital Design & Development Assistant supports the Council’s digital transformation by helping to design and build user‑friendly online forms and website content. Working with services across Somerset Council, you’ll create accessible, user‑centred digital solutions and contribute to continuous improvements across our websites and applications.
We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset, and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:
- Assisting with designing and developing digital forms using Granicus (Firmstep) and GOSS, and help deliver digital projects from concept to launch, ensuring accessibility and standards compliance.
- Creating and managing clear, inclusive digital content in CMS platforms (including WordPress).
- Supporting colleagues in using digital tools, providing guidance and training where needed.
- Using analytics and user feedback to improve forms, content and online services.
- Contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of council websites and applications, while staying up to date with digital trends and best practice.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
You’ll bring a can-do attitude, detail-focused and a user-centred mindset. You don’t need to be an expert in everything – what matters is your willingness to learn and your passion for great digital experiences.
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be, but it will really help if you have:
- Knowledge of digital design principles and accessibility standards.
- Understanding of HTML, CSS or similar web technologies.
- Experience working with CMS platforms and contributing to digital design or development projects.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts simply.
- Experience using digital forms packages (e.g., Granicus) and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset, and that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.
We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there’s anything you want to talk about before you apply.
