About the job

Key information

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic Information Security Officer to join our Information, Data and Governance Team, working within our Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) department. You will join us on a full time, permanent basis, working 37 hours per week. In return you will receive a competitive salary of £38,220 – £40,777 (gross) per annum. The role is based at our Service Headquarters in Exeter, but there is some flexibility in working locations that can be discussed with the successful candidate.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is the largest non-metropolitan fire and rescue service in England. We provide prevention, protection and response services across the counties of Devon and Somerset.

Our vision is that together, we will work to end preventable fire and rescue emergencies, creating a safer world for you and your family. Keeping people safe is what we do, and we owe our fantastic reputation to our highly skilled and motivated workforce.

Do not just take our word for it, here is what the team has to say:

“Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is a gratifying place to work. I have had the opportunity to gain qualifications and experience in various areas of ICT. The comradery between the Firefighters spreads across the Service, which increases cooperation between departments.” – ICT Service Desk Technician

“I genuinely feel valued, respected and included because everyone has a role to play, and it is definitely a ‘team’ ethos. It is great to see such commitment to growth and progression at all levels, as well as leaders providing clear leadership and direction which is at the heart of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service” – Information Governance Officer.

What will I be doing?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team which supports the Service in delivering information assurance to the Executive Board. Information Security (Infosec) is a key discipline within the Information and Data Governance Team, part of the wider Digital Data and Technology Department. Infosec sits outside of the ICT team to ensure independent support, advice and assessment is provided.

The role is dynamic and reactive to security events as and when they occur. Technical security assessments are key, ensuring the Service reap the benefits of a security and privacy by design culture. Monitoring and auditing against the Service’s baseline control set provides assurance to the board that the Service is robust in its defence against cyber attacks.

This role would suit an individual who enjoys problem solving, helping others, has a strong attention to detail, great communication skills and is confident making decisions around statutory and operational guidance.

This role can be completed largely from home, or any local Service premises, with the expectation that the successful candidate will come to Service Headquarters when required. Currently there is mandatory attendance at a monthly team meeting with the wider Information and Data Governance Function.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Championing security by design, completed Technical Security Assessments for new software requires and other initiatives as part of the Service change programme.
  • Responding to and monitoring the threat landscape, investigating security events and making recommendations for mitigation.
  • Auditing against ISO27001 baseline control set.
  • Delivering training and awareness, including leading on simulated phishing campaigns.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

The ideal candidate will have a foundational qualification in ICT and demonstrable experience of working within the specialist discipline of information and cyber security. In addition, a working knowledge within the field of data protection will be an advantage.
