What will I be doing?

Birchfield Community Primary School are working in conjunction with SASP to create our own School Street. This is a national project aimed at creating a safe and pleasant traffic free environment outside the school, improving air quality and encouraging greater levels of walking, cycling and scooting for all or part of the journey to and from school.

A School Street is a road outside a school that has a restriction on vehicle access at school drop-off and pick-up times.

To support this initiative and ensure the success of our school street, we are looking to appoint a School Street Steward, main duties to include:

  • Position signs and bollards and to inform drivers about the road closures and why they are happening.
  • Manage traffic within the school street closure times by diverting traffic and suggesting alternative routes and places to park and guiding drivers e.g. blue badge holders, visitors to the doctor’s surgery or delivery drivers through the road closure area.
  • Ensure the safety of all non-vehicle users
  •  Engage with children, parents and the wider community
  • Promote and champion the purpose of the school street initiative
