About the Role
The Total Pay & Reward team plays an important role in ensuring Somerset Council has fair, transparent and consistent approaches to pay and grading. The team supports services across the organisation, helping to make sure roles are evaluated accurately and equitably while reducing equal pay risk and maintaining confidence in our processes.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced job evaluation professional to play a key role in a significant council-wide programme that will help shape future workforce and pay decisions across Somerset Council. As a Senior Job Evaluation Analyst, you’ll lead on complex evaluations, provide technical guidance and support quality assurance activity, helping to maintain robust, consistent and evidence-based decision-making across the organisation.
Working closely with HR colleagues, managers, trade unions and fellow analysts, you’ll help build confidence in the job evaluation process while supporting and developing other analysts. Your work will directly support our commitment to fairness, consistency and good employment practices, making a real difference to both colleagues and the wider organisation.
How You’ll Make a Difference
- Lead on complex and sensitive job evaluations, ensuring decisions are evidence-based, consistent and fair.
- Provide technical guidance and support to analysts and colleagues, helping maintain high standards and consistent practice.
- Review evaluation outcomes and quality assurance processes to identify risks, improve accuracy and support equal pay compliance.
- Work collaboratively with managers, HR colleagues and trade union representatives to explain processes, resolve queries and build confidence in outcomes.
- Help develop and improve job evaluation guidance, standards and ways of working to support the successful delivery of the wider programme.
What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
- Significant experience of analysing and evaluating complex roles within a structured job evaluation or reward framework.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret detailed information and make balanced, evidence-based decisions.
- A good understanding of job evaluation principles, equal pay considerations and the importance of consistency and quality assurance.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience of reviewing work, providing technical guidance or supporting the development of colleagues, alongside strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
Experience of the NJC Job Evaluation Scheme, Gauge+ or job evaluation within a local government environment would be advantageous, although training in Somerset Council’s approach will be provided.
